Germany gets a green light from the European Union to give $165 million for research on internet search-engine tech that could challenge Google. The Theseus project would develop an advanced multimedia search engine to translate, identify and index images, audio and text.
Initially, the German government would pay several “icebreaker” companies - Siemens AG, SAP AG, Deutsche Thomson oHG and EMPOLIS GmbH, owned by Bertelsmann AG - to kick start research. Later, the German funding would be spread out to small and medium businesses for them to build on the earlier research.

The service is aimed at small businesses with a Web presence that require a good search engine for the website, but don?t have the money, staff, or experience to do it alone or purchase a more expensive package. Google also offers Mini and Search Appliance solutions to larger enterprises for US$1,995 and $30,000 respectively, but the Business Edition costs a mere $100.
For that $100, you get 5,000 page searches, and this can increase to a maximum of 50,000 pages for $500. Google will consider even more page searches, but for an undisclosed higher price bracket.
Setting up this new search feature for a website is very simple, and Google has employed a wizard asking for specific details about your website, which it then uses to set up the search functionality. Users also have a lot of control over how the search works and can customize features such as the background color behind search results, where the site logo sits by the search box, or even dive into XML for a fully-customized search option.
One problem users may have with the Business Edition, as pointed out by Forrester Research analyst Matt Brown, is that no control is given over when a site is indexed by Google. This means a newly posted entry on the site may not be taken into account on search results immediately.

The Inside AdWords blog announced the official release of a new metric you can find in your AdWords reports. The new metric is impression share, which we actually reported back in April.
The new metrics include:
Impression Share (IS): The percentage of times your ads were shown out of the total available impressions in the market you were targeting. This metric is available at the campaign and account level for search.
Lost IS (Rank): The percentage of impressions lost due to low Ad Rank (cost-per-click bid x Quality Score).
Lost IS (Budget): The percentage of impressions lost due to budget constraints.

Irish users of internet video giant YouTube will soon have their own country-specific site, as part of a major localisation project announced Tuesday.
The Google subsidiary will be launching local versions of its site for Ireland, Brazil, France, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the UK. In a statement, YouTube said that this was just the ‘first step’ towards launching fully localised sites for each of the nine countries.
Each site will initially be translated fully, with local homepages and search functions. Over time, an entirely ‘local’ experience will be added that will allow for country-specific video rankings and comments, as well as country-specific Video, Channel, Category and Community sections.

David Naylor has an excellent explanation of some of the advanced ways to use dynamic keyword insertion within Google AdWords.
Dynamic keyword insertion, also known as DKI, allows advertisers to specify if they would like the search query to be shown in their ad text for keywords that match their ads. For example, if I want an ad to be displayed for a search on “search engine optimization” but a person types in SEO, the ad title will pick up the query and display “SEO” instead of search engine optimization. This helps increase an ad’s click through rate.

Google’s free multivariate testing application helps online marketers increase visitor conversion rates and overall visitor satisfaction by continually testing different combinations of site content (text and images). Rather than sitting in a room and arguing over what will work better, you can save time and eliminate the guesswork by simply letting your visitors tell you what works best.
